Customer: U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Southwest Division
LOCATION: Former Marine Corps Station (MCAS) El Toro, CA
RMA served as prime contractor on this multi-year contract to close inactive groundwater monitoring wells and perform geophysical surveys at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in El Toro, CA. Our monitoring well closure/abandonment process was performed by pressure grouting in accordance with the standards set by the California Department of Water Resources.
Prior to closure, RMA opened and gauged each well with a sounding probe to measure depth to water and to check for debris or obstructions that might interfere with the grouting procedure. A sealant material consisting of high-plasticity bentonite grout was then mixed at the surface. Grout was pumped into the well under pressure to reduce the possibility of bridging and to force some of the sealant through the screen and into surrounding pore spaces of the filter pack.
RMA also completed demolition and removal of surface completions, traffic posts, bollards, concrete pads, and well monuments, followed by land surveying. All work was completed without safety incidents.
RMA received and Outstanding Performance Evaluation from the government for this project.
